Lifter tap on cold starts, sadly pretty normal for the modern Hemi. As long as it goes away in 1-2 seconds I don't think it's a big deal. I've had a 6.1, 2 392s and now the redeye and they all have done it at times. Never what I would consider bad though.

The dreaded Hemi tick...my last 3 p/u's had it...I learned to ignore it..each one logged over 100,000 trouble free miles...

I guess I've always heard the Hemi tick is more of tick at idle when the engine is warm, I've never had an engine with that thankfully. Lifter tap on cold starts is a different thing.

Mine have always been on cold starts...some were louder than others...none were problematic...

I’ve got 125,000 on my Ram and on cold starts it does it for a few secs and goes away. No biggie.

YES. My Durango SRT has done it a few times after extended sits. The first time scared the crap out of me - the ticking was very loud and lasted for a good minute! I have since tried to at least start it up for a minute at least once a week if not driven, and it has only done it once or twice since and lasted for only 10 seconds or so.

My wife's 2021 R/T Durango does the same thing. Didn't start until we got to Tennessee last April. The tick stops in 3 to 5 seconds.

Sorta related, my neighbor has a '21 Redeye, and after a 6-month sit (post-fire) it blew out a nice burst of smoke at start-up. It quickly went away but I was a bit surprised. Reminded me of the last gen of muscle (60s-70s) when that was/is a common site. My Demon, after a similar post-fire hibernation, fired right up (no tick and no smoke). He didn't believe me when I told him what I saw (he was in the driver's seat, no remote start). I guess ignorance is bliss, lol I told him to bring it in since it is under warranty but he shrugged it off.

The only one I've had ticking in was a '14 6.4. and once putting the correct oil in it (not just the right grade), the tick went away.

That includes a few 6.2s that sit for weeks at a time, and up to six months and change. And I would rather listen to very loud ticking than cold starting one for no reason, by the way.

I wonder if that tick or delay in lubrication getting to the valve train is a problem? You have to be a little concerned about a roller lifter needle bearing going bad once you get over 125,000 miles or on 6 or 7 year old Hemi’s. I had a lifter go at 144,000 on my 2013 5.7 Daytona. It wasn’t fatal but kind of expensive.

What exactly is the correct oil for the 6.4s? Not trying to start a debate at all. I'm just genuinely curious as I've purchased many quarts of the recommended Pennzoil Ultra Platinum for my '21 Durango SRT. I've wondered if there may be a better option that I could consider.

Sorry, I don't remember what was specified for those...it was a 0W/20 but not which one.
What didn't work well was Mobil 1 0W/20.

In the 6.2s I've only used the correct Pennzoil.

Thanks. A 0W/40 is specified for my 6.4. That particular Pennzoil UP is what I've stocked up on. It's said to be "exclusively" recommended for SRT engines and meets the Chrysler MS-12633 requirements.

I guess priming it with oil for a few seconds after a long rest would be beneficial? Throttle to floor and crank.

Well, in my case the 6.4s were in Ram pickups, so far from SRTs. Also, things may very well have changed since '14.
We have a '19 Ram with a 6.4, and it's supposed to have 0W/40.

The manual says to do so if it sits for greater than 2 weeks.
