The interesting thing about that statement is that the cross-sectional area doesn't change between the area that twisted and what would be the "fully engaged" position.

(i.e., the shear stress doesn't decrease in a notable way, at least not until you get to a much closer area towards the tip)

If they're saying that the axles weren't fully engaged then are they making their axles just a little short?

They slide in and out due to up and down movement?

But the broken off shaft splines are twisted all the way back. Full engagement which =s a failure in the metal?
