He was less than 1/4 mile from the runway. Its just on the other side of the track. If the engine ran just 45 seconds longer he would have made the runway.

45 seconds sounds like a long time for a plane or anything to go 1320 ft, but I guess that includes having to circle around and make the approach

Cherokee 6 approach speed is 65kts or 75mph indicated. Ground speed is generally slower due to a headwind component though. Assuming 75mph over the ground, in 45 seconds he would cover .9375 miles. Too damn close for comfort that's for sure.
