Can't remove caliper cross-bridge. Please help.

I tried replacing my front pads/rotors this weekend but could not for the life of me remove this center bolt:



Would it be okay (or possible) to skip this step and remove the caliper with it still there and slide the caliper back into place with the new pads and rotor already in position?

No. It is13mm. I know it by memory. Get a good socket on it and loosen it. I remove mine with a small wrench.

Can't you just remove the pins?
Spring comes out, press the cylinders, slide out the pads and replace.
Not saying that is what I did (getting old), but I think I did it that way..
(That was a pads only task though).

I don’t understand why the small shit bolt cannot be broken loose. But…..

You could, but it is going to be a bitch to slide the caliper w/pads over the rotors. Never done it, would not try it myself, better make sure the pistons are completely pushed in to get max clearance.

If I recall correctly, not all Hellcats came with that bolt, so some of us got away with just removing the pins. That bolt needs to come out, unless you remove the caliper and pull the pads out the other way.
That bolt probably has brake dust and corrosion on the threads, so clean it up and maybe add some heat to the nut if you have to.

Getting ready to do this also
Put some other pads in and didn't like the stopping power and can't remember the brand.
But, it seemed pretty simple.
Going back with stock Brembo's.
They were fairly inexpensive from Brembo.
To be clear, I removed and replaced the pads and it was pretty easy.

Easy job. Take a drift to it, just don’t hit the caliper

Need clarification...

Did you remove the pins and spring clip FIRST?

Can you remove the bolt holding the large center piece, or is it frozen?

Is the large center piece frozen (corrosion) in the caliper.

Ultimately, yes, you can change the pads by removing the side pins and spring clip first, then removing the entire caliper, BUT, it's the really hard way.

Wouldn't be the first time I made that mistake on a bolt turned backwards from me

Maybe should have just got out an impact wrench and been done with it if necessary. I tighten mine with a small hand wrench. Works for some pretty gruesome braking too.
