Just not true, I have 2 Ev's and as I have said before the decrease in range is between 20 and 25% in cold weather (below freezing). Even with the reduced range, it costs me less than $ 3.50 in electricity (35 KW) to drive 100 miles. Lets keep it real
So those Tesla owners were just hanging out at the charging station for fun?

A Jeep qualifies as conquest vehicle so I can obtain 10K off the MSRP from the manufacturer...
The 10% off MSRP applies to most Stellantis vehicles. Including the Ram 3500 we bought recently.

The 10% off MSRP applies to most Stellantis vehicles. Including the Ram 3500 we bought recently.
In order to achieve a fast charge rate using a Level 3 charger, the battery has to be warmed up to around 70 degrees. Therefore, the charge time is much greater until this battery temperature is achieved. To aide in this BMS (Battery Management System) will pre heat the battery if the computer knows the car is going to the charging station.

It is my understanding that the Teslas were dying waiting to obtain a charge, that the cars were not charging or charging very slowly. The coldest I have charged in Level 3 is 20 degrees and the charge rate was slow (45KW) until the battery warmed up, which took 25 minutes (I didn't use the BMS to pre heat the battery).

These problems do not occur with Level 2 charging which is 240 Volts at 40 amps, in my situation. The Ioniq5s will charge 9.55 KW in level 2 at 17 degrees.

Not stating 10% off MSRP, stating $ 10,000 off a 50K car which is approximately 20% MSRP.

IMO, if one lives in an apartment building or townhouse where level 2 charging is not an option, do not buy an EV. Relying on the charging stations is not a good plan, they are not reliable.

IMO, if one lives in an apartment building or townhouse where level 2 charging is not an option, do not buy an EV. Relying on the charging stations is not a good plan, they are not reliable.
They installed a charging station quite close to here. Apparently it's not hooked up to any electricity, but that may not matter much since the access to it wasn't plowed.

And even if it was hooked up and accessible, at -22 like it was the other day it's highly doubtful than any tourist would've made it even remotely close to it anyway.

We paid $ 15,000 less in Federal taxes due to the tax credit ($ 7,500.00 per vehicle). Say our federal taxes were $ 40K, the tax credit lowered them to 25K (40K - 15K). We paid less in Federal Tax because of the tax credits. There was NO Federal handout.
You are missing your true calling if you're not a politician. "We paid $ 15,000 less in Federal taxes due to the tax credit...There was NO Federal handout." What do you think the $15,000 less in Federal taxes was, if not a handout? And you complain other people aren't rational?

There is a huge difference between reducing your tax rate versus getting paid by the Federal Government. For example, some who have the right investments, business pay no taxes, legally. The businesses typically revolve around real estate. For example, if a apartment building is purchased and improvements are made and the value goes up the property can be refinanced, money pulled out of the property and the invested in other property, the money pulled out of the property is NOT taxable. The very very wealthy pay no or very little taxes, Warren Buffett used to say his secretary pays more in taxes than he does. Is Warren Buffett getting a handout because he pays very little federal taxes? No, it is called being smart and knowing the tax code.

"So does cold weather affect EV charging? Yes, but why is that the case? In short, cold temperatures slow down the chemical process of battery charging and cause deposits of lithium to build upon key battery components, reducing the efficiency of the battery over time. A study by the Idaho National Laboratory showed that at 36°F, an EV battery took on 36% less power than it did at 77°F."

I think the EV is a great idea if you use it to get groceries, visit your neighbors, hit the local pub, maybe drive to work if you live close. Boring, but utilitarian.

I visited my sister in the Villages last month. Lots of people there are thrilled to drive their golf carts around, cheap and convenient. But some of us expect a vehicle to be ready to go at all times, any time of day or night, winter or summer, hurricane, blizzard or arctic chill. Like the old Fed Ex commercials, if you absolutely, positively need to be somewhere regardless of conditions, ICE is the only rational choice.

I might reconsider an EV when the presidential motorcade and all the SS vehicles are EV’s. Until then, I prefer to stay with the tried and true.

I have a 21y year old truck and a 20y old Jeep still going strong. If they were EV’s they would have been in the scrap heap 12y ago. And the gvt did not subsidize them!

I should probably admit that I have an EV of sorts.

It's a John Deere eGator which appealed to me at the time since it only cost $1,600. It never leaves the property, and its biggest advantage is that it's really good for shooting prairie dogs from, being very quiet.

At times I use it as a dinghy, after having made a towbar for it, so I can go get more tools or whatever. DSCN0632.JPG
And yes, I did put a bullet mirror and a fancier steering wheel on it to make it less boring.

EV owners can decrease their use of the standard heater by dressing warmly, letting the car warm up by starting it up while it is still charged, and using seat warmers. AAA found that electric vehicles only lost an average of 12 percent of range when the heater wasn’t used compared to the 40 percent drop with heater use."

More fake news, you are saying that the study showed that the battery pack could only be charged to 64%, just wrong, when I charge the charger and car will tell how many KW the battery took. The batter pack is 77KW, so if the charge is 50% it will take 38.5 KW. Guess what, it took 40 KW at 17 degrees. Now how do I know the efficiency? The car tells you how many miles per KW it is getting. You just crack me up

That is actually good, the Revian and Ford Lighting get about the same efficiency towing 7,500 pounds, as I recall. 0.8 to 1 mile per KW is not going to cut it.

Yep, some on the EV forums suggest using the seat heaters and not using the heater at all. I have been at the charging station when out of state cars pull up (obviously taking a trip) wearing winter jackets.

That is why we don't take trips greater than 110 miles away with them. However, the Lucid with 516 range (which is really 450 miles or so) greatly increases that.

That is why we don't take trips greater than 110 miles away with them. However, the Lucid with 516 range (which is really 450 miles or so) greatly increases that.
That's still not enough range. Many times we'll run 600 miles or more. Not going to waste time charging the damn thing up only getting so much charge at different stops.

That's still not enough range. Many times we'll run 600 miles or more. Not going to waste time charging the damn thing up only getting so much charge at different stops.
Well then you gotta wait for the solid state batteries which will be out in a couple of years. The Chinese company BYD EV just went 660 miles on a single charge. Toyota announced solid state battery will be in production 2027/2028. Toyota claims a range will be far in excess of 700 miles, Porsche also has one in the works with even more range.

Exciting times.

FYI- the Lucid charges at 900 volts and has the quickest charge rate because the 900 volts, Porsche started the 800 volt charging architecture, everyone copied it because it allows for higher charging rates without creating all the heat associated with the amps. Tesla just recently (last couple of years) went to 800 volt charging, they were always using 400 volt architecture.
