Well, the aftermarket has been over 1000hp with ICE cars for 30+ years now.
Street cars ran well into the 8s in the 90s.
With that said, manufacturers have been fighting government and emissions to go along with their HP.
Now we have huge $$$ on the table to push the EV envelope. Or at least, that is what the Government was hoping.
1000hp has been no big deal for 20 years now. It has just never come from the factory that way.
But there was always a perception of EVs being slow and terrible.
See this Simpsons take as an example:
But I do agree, it is the future. But I think they needed some of these crazy ass EVs just to show that they are not slow or weak.
But now they need to do a proper sports car. One that handles like a Vette or maybe even something smaller like a GTI or Civic R etc. Those cars don't need 1000hp but they do need to be nimble.
And priced right.
I have been researching solar panels and finishing my garage to handle ev charging and getting an EV just to bomb around in. Every car I own is ass on gas. It would be nice to just pay a few hundred a month in a lease and have a "fun" appliance to drive.
